June, 2009: Pritor®/Kinzal® at the 19th European Meeting on Hypertension, Milan

With a capacity seated and standing audience of nearly 500 delegates, this year's Bayer Schering Pharma (BSP) programme at 19th European Meeting on Hypertension, Milan, was a huge success. The Topical Workshop – Effective blood pressure lowering reduces cardiovascular risk – was part of the main congress programme and combined educational support for the use of both Pritor®/Kinzal® and Adalat. Chaired by Professors Athanasios Manolis (Greece) and Antonio Coca (Spain) the programme examined the need to manage difficult-to-treat hypertensive patients with appropriate, aggressive and early intervention.

The workshop was attended by members of the ICMA faculty, including Profs. Peter Meredith (UK), Roland Asmar (France) and Alejandro de la Sierra (Spain). Prof. Asmar provided a succinct update on the ONTARGET® trial, reminding the participants that the results show Pritor®/Kinzal® to be as effective for CV risk reduction as the gold standard ramipril but with a superior tolerability profile. The additional metabolic benefits of Pritor®/Kinzal® were presented by Prof. de la Sierra, who demonstrated that in difficult-to-treat metabolic syndrome patients, Pritor®/Kinzal® has a clear advantage, particularly for reducing the risk of developing T2D.

In addition, Prof. Paolo Verdecchia (Italy) presented preliminary data from the pre-specified LVH (left ventricular hypertrophy) analysis of the ONTARGET®-TRANSCEND® trials in the late breaking news session. TRANSCEND® demonstrated that LVH was significantly reduced by Pritor®/Kinzal® compared with placebo, and in patients without LVH at study entry, new LVH was significantly less frequent with Pritor®/Kinzal® than with placebo. In addition, analysis of the ONTARGET® trial data showed less incidence of LVH at follow-up with Pritor®/Kinzal® compared with ramipril.

The scientific presence at the congress was supported by the new BSP booth, which not only promoted the clinical benefits of Pritor®/Kinzal® and Adalat but provided delegates the opportunity to get a free full text subscription to Cardiometabolism Expert. More than 400 physicians subscribed to the service. Invited faculty members also congregated at the booth to debate hot topics.
