What is cardiovascular disease?
Cardiovascular disease, commonly referred to as ‘heart disease’, is a broad term used to describe a variety of different conditions that affect your heart and blood vessels. These include:
- Coronary heart disease (e.g. chest pain or heart attack)
- Arrhythmia (irregular heart beat)
- Congenital heart defects (heart problems you’re born with)
Other heart conditions – such as infections that affect your heart’s muscle, valves or beating rhythm – are also considered forms of cardiovascular disease.
